What happens when art takes to the street and the street to the museum? In this course Word & Image: from poster to Popart, we dive into the fascinating interplay between word and image, art and popular culture, from the belle époque to pop art. We follow artists who draw inspiration from advertising, headlines, graffiti and comics, transforming everyday imagery into something new, challenging or poetic.
In four lessons, you will travel with Barry Heinrichs from the seductive posters of Parisian nightlife around 1890 (Mucha, Toulouse-Lautrec, to the experimental word art of Picasso, Braque and the Surrealists. Then we dive into the free hand and wild gesture of Pollock and Twombly, ending in the explosive world of comic book art and pop art: WHAAM!, LOVE, OOF. Along the way, we discover how the word appears in images, how the street invades art, and how artists played with advertising, typography and popular media to find new forms of expressiveness.
You will learn to look at both art and the everyday visual environment with new eyes. After this course, you will have a better understanding of how visual language works, how artists use it to create meaning and how those images continue to influence us.
The content of the lessons is as follows:
- Posters, posters and advertisements in Paris around 1890: Toulouse-Lautrec, Mucha, Folies Bergère, Moulin Rouge, Le Chat Noir. Job tissue paper and Absinthe.
- The entrance of the word into art (Paris circa 1910): Le Journal, Ma Jolie, Kube d'Or, Vieux Marc and Pernod; 1920s and 1930s, Lucky Strike, Michelin, Dada & Surrealism
- Graffiti & Ecriture Automatique: Pompeii, Giacomo Balla, Jackson Pollock, Cy Tombly; Pop Art
- Comic & Art: WHAAM! As I Opened Fire: Oldenburg, Lichtenstein, Guston et al; Art and the word NOW
How does that work online?
You take this course online from your own computer or tablet. All you need is a good internet connection and sound. Teacher and images will appear on your screen automatically. If you cannot attend 'live', you can watch the replay afterwards. Registration is therefore still possible until after lesson 2 of the course.

Do I need any prior knowledge to take a course?
No, most of KLU’s online art history courses do not require any prior knowledge. The courses are aimed at adults with an interest in art and culture, even if they have not previously studied art history.
Are you completely new to art history? Then this course is Introduction to Art History a good place to start. You can also filter our course listings to show introductory courses.
What exactly does the taster lesson involve?
The taster lesson is the first lesson of a course, which you can attend free of charge and with no obligation. There’s no commitment: afterwards, you decide for yourself whether you want to take the full course. You can sign up for a taster lesson via the course page. If I’m unable to attend one or more of the class dates, can I still take the course?
Yes, even if you miss a live class, you can watch it later on KLU. After each class, you’ll automatically receive a link to the recording by email. It’s valid for 14 days, and you can watch the recording as often as you like.
Many students even complete the entire course via the recording. This means you don’t need to be present on the scheduled date to complete the full course.
