The pure beauty of Scandinavia

In this Pure Beauty of Scandinavia course, Yvonne Hilgenkamp tells you all about the beauty and peculiarities of architecture, art and design from the far North. Mighty fjords, steaming geysers, the Northern Lights: the nature of the Nordic countries is grand and overwhelmingly beautiful. That nature inspired many artists, architects and designers including Edvard Munch and Alvar Aalto. But it is not just nature that makes Scandinavia attractive. Scandinavia is hip & happening. In 2016, Danish architect Bjarke Ingels (BIG) was named one of the most influential people of the year by Time Magazine.

The focus will be on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and contemporary times. We will go through medieval stave churches, Norwegian landscape painting, the impressionist Skagen painters, Symbolism by Akseli gallen-Kalela to the organic functionalism of the famous Finnish architect Alvar Aalto, the rise of Danish Design and, of course, the simple, well-designed, Scandinavian products that are pre-eminent in Reconstruction: lamps, fabrics, chairs other designs by Marimekko, Henningsen, Eero Saarinen, and Arne Jacobs (Egg Chair). On the visual arts front, we discuss Per Kirkeby, Olafur Eliasson and the duo Elmgreen & Dragset. The lecture series ends with the surprising, almost playful architecture of Bjarke Ingels, as well as that of Scandinavian contemporary agencies such as Snøhetta and Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter.

The pure beauty of Scandinavia: timeless, elegant and masterful in materials; at the same time bold, imaginative and progressive. High time to go on a cultural discovery in the Far North!

Reviews of this course

I am very excited! Yvonne thanks for the happy and enthusiastic way of presenting. The course was very informative, versatile and all aspects such as ancient art, modern art, architecture, fine art and design were covered in a nice mix. The course increased our sense of Scandinavia even more and art is going to be a significant part of it.
About The pure beauty of Scandinavia
I really loved Yvonne's course. It remains amazing the way she can convey everything with enthusiasm. She even got me excited about modern architecture which I thought was not my preference. And it's especially nice that I can take the course just from home. I will definitely take more courses from Yvonne.
