This online course introduces you to the pioneering art movements of the early 20th century. Do you find modern art inaccessible? Maybe you sometimes think, "My little sister can do that too!" After taking this course, you will probably think very differently!
We explore the exciting and experimental movements that dramatically changed the art world at the beginning of the 20th century. You will closely follow the rapid succession of new developments. We start with realism and impressionism in the late 19th century and make the journey through post-impressionism all the way to abstract art around World War II. Along the way, all major movements pass by: cubism, futurism, Dadaism, De Stijl, suprematism, abstract expressionism and more.
By the end of the course, you will not only be able to distinguish between these movements, but also understand their main characteristics. Teacher Karlijn de Jong, a specialist in Dutch modern art, will pay special attention in the final lesson to luminaries such as Jan Sluijters, Jan Toorop, Carel Willink and Pyke Koch, to give you a deeper look at the Dutch contribution to modern art.

Karlijn de Jong
Karlijn de Jong is an art historian. During her studies, she focused on educational practice and specialised in Dutch modern art at the beginning of the 20th century. Today, she is a teacher, conducts research and collaborates on publications for exhibitions on Dutch modern art in various museums.

What will I learn on the Modern Art course?
In KLU’s Modern Art course, you’ll be introduced to the groundbreaking art movements of the early twentieth century. Do you find modern art inaccessible, or do you ever think, “My little sister could do that too”? After this course, you’ll probably think very differently about it.
You will follow the rapid succession of artistic movements from Realism and Impressionism, through Cubism, Futurism, Dadaism, De Stijl and Suprematism, to abstract art around the time of the Second World War. We will also focus specifically on Dutch modern art.
Do I need any prior knowledge for the Modern Art course?
No prior knowledge is required for KLU’s Modern Art course. In fact, the course is particularly suitable for people who find modern art difficult to understand; that feeling will soon disappear.
Have you already taken the Introduction to Art History course? If so, the Modern Art course builds on that nicely. However, the course also stands entirely on its own.
Which art movements and periods are covered in the Modern Art course?
In KLU’s Modern Art course, you’ll begin with Realism and Impressionism, and the course covers almost all the movements of the early 20th century: Post-Impressionism, Cubism, Futurism, Dadaism, De Stijl, Suprematism and Abstract Expressionism, etc.
