In this modern architecture online course, you will get a clear overview of architecture from the early 20th century to our time in six lessons. From the late 19th century, innovations in the visual arts followed in quick succession. Nevertheless, the real modernisation of architecture did not take place until later. It took a long time before the neo-styles were abandoned, but when that happened, architecture became abruptly contemporary and mainly functionalist. Architecture historian Yvonne Hilgenkamp discusses modern architecture of the 20th century. You will learn to better understand, recognise and place this architecture.
By the end of the course, you will know the main styles and -isms such as functionalism, structuralism, brutalism, postmodernism, deconstructivism and high-tech architecture. The most iconic structures will pass by. From legends of modernism/functionalism such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe to those of contemporary starchitects such as Rem Koolhaas, Tadao Ando, Zaha Hadid, Santiago Calatrava, Bjarke Ingles, Norman Foster and Carlo Scarpa.
How does that work online?
You take this course online from your own computer or tablet. All you need is a good internet connection and sound. Teacher and images will appear on your screen automatically. If you cannot attend 'live', you can watch the replay afterwards. Registration is therefore still possible until after lesson 2 of the course.

Yvonne Hilgenkamp
Yvonne Hilgenkamp is an art historian as well as an architectural historian, and has many years of experience in presenting the rich history of Western architecture, urban planning and art. She clearly makes art history accessible to a diverse audience. Her interests are broad and range from the Romans to Rembrandt, from De Pijp to Paris and from Art Déco to Dubai's skyscrapers. About all these subjects she likes to talk and enthusiastically!

What exactly does the taster lesson involve?
The taster lesson is the first lesson of a course, which you can attend free of charge and with no obligation. Do I need any prior knowledge for the Modern Architecture course?
No prior knowledge is required for KLU’s Modern Architecture course. The course can be taken independently, but we may recommend that you first take the course Introduction to Architecture To follow: Modern Architecture builds on this and is best appreciated if you already have the basics in place.
If I’m unable to attend one or more of the class dates, can I still take the course?
Yes, even if you miss a live class, you can watch it later on KLU. After each class, you’ll automatically receive a link to the recording by email. It’s valid for 14 days, and you can watch the recording as often as you like.
Many students even complete the entire course via the recording. This means you don’t need to be present on the scheduled date to complete the full course.
