Introduction to art history

N.B. This course is taught in Dutch.

This Introduction to Art History online course is a first introduction to art history. Do you want to learn to understand and appreciate art better? Get an overview of the entire history of art in a short time and learn to recognise the main styles and periods? This course has it all. We discuss art history from the Greeks and Romans to modern art. For example, you will learn how Gothic architecture differs from Romanesque. What the difference is between Renaissance painting and Impressionism. Why Rembrandt's Night Watch or Van Gogh's Starry Night is so famous. Why Michelangelo il divinoor the divine, and what do you recognise Flemish Primitives or Baroque in? If you know just a little bit more about art history, you will already look at familiar works of art with completely different eyes and have more fun visiting museums or that one church you walk into on holiday.

In eight lessons, you will be led through the entire history of Western art in chronological order. Subjects covered include painting, sculpture and architecture. On completion of this course, you will have learned about the main styles and periods, acquired a good basic knowledge and overview of art history and also learned to appreciate art in its context of time. The format of the lessons is as follows:

  1. Classical antiquity
  2. Romanesque/early medieval
  3. Gothic/Late Middle Ages
  4. Renaissance
  5. Baroque & golden age, classicism
  6. Neo-classicism, romanticism & realism
